What thicknesses and tolerances are typical for cold-rolled steel sections?

Cold-rolled steel sections are typically produced in thicknesses ranging from 1.2 mm to 3.2 mm, depending on the profile type and structural requirement. Heavier sections (up to 4 mm) can be manufactured for specific load-bearing applications.

Because cold-rolling is performed at room temperature, the process achieves tighter dimensional control than hot-rolled steel. Standards such as BS EN 10162 (equivalent to DIN EN 10162) define acceptable tolerances for thickness, width, length, straightness, and cross-sectional geometry.

At NW Metal Sections, we maintain these tolerances to ensure every C section, Z purlin, or top-hat profile fits precisely within modular systems and structural assemblies, typically within ±0.25 mm on thickness and ±1 mm on width, depending on the gauge and material grade.

Can cold-rolled sections be welded or joined easily on site?

Yes, cold-rolled steel is suitable for welding, bolting, and other joining techniques. However, because the material can have higher stress levels from forming, proper welding procedures, pre-heating (if needed), and stress relief should be considered.
